AMD introduces Radeon Pro Image Boost for 3ds Max | CGBucket

AMD has extended Image Boost, the viewport enhancement technology available as part of the driver software for its workstation graphics cards, to 3ds Max and Revit as well as CAD applications.

The functionality, which renders the user’s screen at a higher resolution, then scales it down to the native resolution of the monitor, is available via the new 21.Q3 update to AMD’s Radeon Pro Software for Enterprise.

Renders your screen at QHD or 4K resolution, then scales it back to the native resolution of your monitor
Image Boost enhances the viewport in 3D software by rendering the user’s screen at high resolution, then automatically scaling the output down to the native resolution of the monitor.

The process enhances the crispness of the viewport display, at the cost of making extra work for the GPU.

It’s aimed at artists working on HD monitors, making it possible to view models in the viewport with a precision normally only possible on QHD or 4K UHD displays.

Users can choose to render at resolutions up to 3,840 x 2,160px (4K UHD) when working with a 16:9 aspect ratio, or 5,120 x 2,160px when working in 21:9 widescreen.

Now available for DCC as well as CAD software
Image Boost has been available for CAD applications like SolidWorks and Siemens NX for a while now – the online user guide dates back to 2019 – but has now been extended to 3ds Max and Revit.

Support for the new apps was added in the 21.Q3 update to AMD’s Radeon Pro Software for Enterprise drivers for users of the firm’s workstation GPUs, including its current Radeon Pro W6000 Series.

The functionality is the latest viewport enhancement targeted at users of DCC and visualisation software.

The previous 21.Q2 driver update introduced Viewport Boost, a new system for boosting viewport frame rates in 3ds Max, Revit, Twinmotion and packaged Unreal Engine 4 projects.

AMD says that it plans to support more applications with both Image Boost and Viewport Boost in future, but hasn’t yet announced which products, or when support will be introduced.

System requirements and availability
Image Boost is available through AMD’s Radeon Pro Software for Enterprise, available free for the firm’s workstation GPUs, starting from the 21.Q3 release.

To use it in 3ds Max or Revit, you will need to be a Radeon PRO W5500, W5700, W6600 or W6800 GPU.
