Computerinsel has released PhotoLine 22, the latest update to its sub-$100 image-editing tool, adding a new non-destructive workflow for Boolean operations on vector shapes, and support for channel masks.

Although not as widely known as the Adobe or Affinity tools, PhotoLine is a versatile image editor, with support for 32-bit linear workflow for bitmap images, plus both vector design and page layout features.

Vector editing: new non-destructive workflow for Boolean operations
The biggest changes in the release are to the vector-editing tools, which get a new non-destructive workflow when performing Boolean operations like union or difference on vector shapes.

Rather than performing the operation immediately, PhotoLine now creates a new path group, as shown in the image above, making it possible to continue to edit the vector layers it contains.

It is also now possible to transform vector layers by dragging control handles to scale or rotate them, in the same way as image layers; and to edit colours in vector patterns directly in the Color Editor.

Bitmap image editing: support for channel masks, new Vibrance filter
New image-editing features include support for channel masks, making it possible to apply masks to the individual colour channels of an image, as shown above.

There is also a new Vibrance filter, which works in a similar way to its equivalents in tools like Photoshop and Affinity Photo, preserving a more natural colour balance when adjusting the saturation of an image.

When colorising greyscale images, it is now possible to assign multiple colours, each with its own tone curve.

Updated 22 December 2020: Computerinsel has released PhotoLine 22.5.

The link on the homepage of the website goes to the changelog for version 22.0, but the main change seems to be native support for Apple’s new Apple Silicon processors like its M1 chip in new MacBooks.

Pricing and availability
PhotoLine 22.5 is available now for Windows 7/10 and Mac OS X 10.9+. It costs €59 (around $65).
