The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating Costume Concept Art for Film & TV, a guide to professional costume concept work, in which DC Universe artist Gina DeDomenico reveals her workflow.

An invaluable insight into the role and techniques of contemporary costume concept artists
Responsible for bringing a costume designer’s vision to life, costume concept artists create the template for building the physical costumes that we see on screen.

In the workshop, which comprises over three and half hours of video training, DeDomenico provides an invaluable insight into this world, based on three decades of industry experience.

As a subject, DeDomenico provides fresh take on a Star Trek classic: the Borg Queen – an illustration that she first tackled back in the 1990s.

During the workshop, she reveals her current concept art process and discusses the changes in techniques that she has seen during her career, revealing just how far the industry has evolved.

After discussing her hardware preferences, DeDomencio explores how she uses figure creation tool DAZ Studio to establish an initial pose for a character, and sets out her entire Photoshop workflow.

The workshop reveals how she illustrates the design elements of a costume, details the character, adds colour and completes her work by setting the background and lighting for the final presentation.

About the artist
Gina DeDomenico is one of the industry’s most prolific costume concept artists, having worked on numerous blockbuster films and popular TV shows, from Malcolm X to Green Lantern and Django Unchained.

She has also worked with stars like John Legend and Madonna, illustrating costumes for tours, and was a costume concept artist for the DC Universe streaming service, working on five shows simultaneously.

Pricing and availability
Creating Costume Concept Art for Film & TV is available via an online subscription to The Gnomon Workshop, providing access to over 300 tutorials. Subscriptions cost $49/month or $490/year.
