The Gnomon Workshop has released Rigging The Jaw With Python in Maya, a guide to current character rigging workflows for VFX and feature animation, recorded by Scanline VFX rigging artist Arturo Coso.

The masterclass, which comprises over four and a half hours of video training, sets out how to code a rebuildable rig for a character’s jaw in Python inside Maya, Autodesk’s movie-industry-standard 3D software.

Master production-approved workflows for coding Maya facial rigs in Python
In production, being able to create a character rig that works in a variety of scenarios, and which can be rebuilt easily if the needs of a project change, is an essential skill.

Such rigs often require a lot of separate nodes and objects, making it inefficient to create them manually.

During his Gnomon Workshop masterclass, Coso reveals how to create a rebuildable jaw rig with an independent lip seal in Python, running through the code line by line.

The workshop is divided into sections by method, to make learning as easy as possible, and is taught in such a way that the workflow can be adapted for the facial rig of any 3D character.

About the artist
Arturo Coso is a rigging artist at VFX studio Scanline VFX, having also previously worked at Cinesite and feature animation firm Ilion Animation Studios.

His credits include movies like Justice League, TV shows like Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots, videogames, cinematics, commercials and architectural visualisation projects.

Pricing and availability
Rigging The Jaw With Python in Maya is available via an online subscription to The Gnomon Workshop, giving you access to over 300 detailed tutorials. Subscriptions cost $49/month or $490/year.
