The Gnomon Workshop has released Getting Started in Cinema 4D for Designers, an introductory guide to Maxon’s 3D software targeted at graphic design and illustration work.

The workshop, which comprises over four hours of video training, is recorded by leading movie poster designer Tomasz Opasinski, and tackles the creation of a poster as a practical project.

The tutorial builds on Opasinski’s previous workshop, Understanding the Principles of Poster Design, which analysed what makes a compelling movie poster.

In the new workshop, Opasinksi sets out the workflow he has used in his own poster design work over the years, creating a poster commemorating The Gnomon Workshop’s 20th anniversary.

The tutorial provides a quick-start guide to Cinema 4D R23, exploring how to navigate the viewport, import 3D objects, texture and light a scene, and set up the camera for rendering.

The final chapter explores how to assemble the render passes generated in Cinema 4D inside Photoshop to create the final poster, exploring how adjustment layers can be used to affect individual layers.

About the artist
Over the course of more than 20 years spent working in entertainment advertising, Tomasz Opasinski has contributed to over 500 brand campaigns for movies, including theatrical, streaming and TV releases.

In his recent role as creative lead at Netflix, he worked on 700 Neflix Originals and 100 innovation projects.

A visual empiricist, author and consultant for major advertising agencies and creative studios, his own practice spans traditional poster-making, digital graffiti, digital photography and 3D modeling.
