RE:Vision Effects releases DEFlicker 2

RE:Vision Effects has released DEFlicker 2, the latest version of its set of plugins for compositing and editing software for removing flicker from high-speed or timelapse footage.

The update introduces a new plugin for removing horizontal banding caused by a camera’s rolling shutter, and improves workflow and performance of the existing three plugins.

First major update to the suite of de-flickering plugins in over five years
First released in 2014, DEFlicker is a set of plugins for common compositing apps, including After Effects, Fusion and Nuke, for removing frame-to-frame flicker in video footage.

Separate plugins are provided for de-flickering high-speed and timelapse footage, and for evening out variations in colour and levels across extended timelapse sequences.

DEFlicker 2: new dedicated plugin for removing rolling bands from high-speed footage
To that, DEFlicker 2 adds a fourth plugin, Rolling Bands, intended to remove horizontal dark bands caused by the mismatch between the refresh frequency of artificial lights and the camera’s rolling shutter.

It uses a semi-automated workflow, shown in the video above, with users dragging templates on screen to define the height and spacing of the bands, and keyframing the templates to match the bands’ speed.

The other three plugins have all been updated, with HighSpeed getting new tools for managing the alpha channel in greenscreen shots, improved noise reduction, and the option to specify source frame rate.

The Timelapse plugin gets “[improved] render speed for sequences over 4K and better handling of colour and lighting shifts”. Auto-Levels gets new methods for fixing or replacing missing or damaged frames.

Pricing and system requirements
DEFlicker 2 is available for a range of host applications, including After Effects, DaVinci Resolve and Fusion, Flame, HitFilm, Natron, Nuke and Silhouette. You can find full system requirements here.

A new node-locked licence costs $249.95; a new floating licence costs $374.95. Headless rendering licences are also available. A single licence works across all host platforms.
