Tutorial: Creating Keyframe Concepts for Film & Animation

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating Keyframe Concepts for Film & Animation, a guide to efficient new tools and workflows for creating keyframe concept art, recorded by Aleksey Pollack.

The workshop covers a range of 2D and 3D software, including Procreate, Photoshop, Gravity Sketch, Blender and 3DCoat, and is aimed at artists with some experience of 3D modelling.

Discover new tools and workflows for creating concept art faster and more flexibly
Over the course of 4.5 hours of video training, Pollack sets out his personal approach to creating concept art, which integrates digital sculpting, VR modelling, and work in Blender, the popular open-source 3D software.

He begins by sketching ideas in 2D before blocking out and refining the scene in 3D, then combining renders of the 3D scene and overpainting them in 2D to create the final image.

As well as helping him to work quickly and efficiently, this “unified toolbelt” approach frees Pollack from the limitations of a traditional step-by-step process, helping him to stay creative.

In the workshop, Pollack also reveals some of his favourite Blender add-ons for speeding up workflow, including Physical Starlight and Atmosphere, the 3DCoat Applink and Sanctus Library.

As well as the training videos, viewers of the workshop can download Pollack’s Blender scene files and final Photoshop file.
